Forever Summer

"Forever Summer" started with just a bass riff on the piano. It sounded vaguely Beach Boy-ish, so it had to be about summer. The lyrics started as "Doo doo doo doo. Doo doo doo doo. Doo. Summer", and grew from there. Most of this was written in the summer of 2005, but I felt that I needed a verse after the first that was not quite as general as the first verse, but would better lead into the more specific verses. For a while, I tried "No more pencils, no more books, no more teachers dirty looks", but since my wife is a teacher, I knew that wouldn't fly. Came up with the Beach Boys stuff in the spring of 2006. The hard part was trying to get the harmonies to sound anything like the Beach Boys. Really made me appreciate the genius of Brian Wilson.

This is one of the few songs I've written where the entire chord progression and melody was written before any of the words (other than "doo, doo, doo", etc.

This song is dedicated to: my family, parents and siblings, with whom I spent many forever summers "riding in the car together"; to my wife and kids, who continue the tradition; and to a "summer love I'll always treasure."

Can you believe it now that it's finally here? Summer!

Could it be we've been waiting almost a year (and it felt like longer)?

Winter's over; Spring's behind us; Autumn's coming (don't remind us).

Now's the time for summer pleasure.

I wish it could be Forever Summer.

Radio's on and playing a summer song (by the Beach Boys).

I can hear music playing all summer long (so help me, Rhonda!)

Summer sounds and summer sights will fill our summer days and nights

With summer joy that can't be measured.

I wish it could be Forever Summer,

Forever Summer, Forever Summer.

Borrow your daddy's car and drive to the shore (to go swimming).

Swimming and having fun is what summer is for (there's no doubt about it).

When a girl is with a fella underneath a beach umbrella

How could life be any better?

I wish it could be Forever Summer.

Taking a special somebody to a show (at the drive-in).

Holding her hand and hoping she won't let go (till the movie's over).

Sharing kisses you'll remember ever after (till September),

Summer love we'll always treasure

I wish it could be Forever Summer,

Forever Summer, Forever Summer.

Pretty soon we'll be taking an overdue vacation.

I can remember when it was me and you (and nobody else).

We still have those memories, but now we have a family

And riding in the car together

Makes it seem like it's Forever Summer

Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo Summer (repeat and fade)

(spoken) Are we there yet?
