Forever
Summer
"Forever Summer" started with just a bass riff on the
piano. It sounded vaguely Beach Boy-ish, so it had to be about summer. The
lyrics started as "Doo doo doo doo. Doo doo doo doo. Doo. Summer", and grew from
there. Most of this was written in the summer of 2005, but I felt that I needed
a verse after the first that was not quite as general as the first verse, but
would better lead into the more specific verses. For a while, I tried "No more
pencils, no more books, no more teachers dirty looks", but since my wife is a
teacher, I knew that wouldn't fly. Came up with the Beach Boys stuff in the
spring of 2006. The hard part was trying to get the harmonies to sound anything
like the Beach Boys. Really made me appreciate the genius of Brian Wilson.
This is one of the few songs I've written where the entire
chord progression and melody was written before any of the words (other than
"doo, doo, doo", etc.
This song is dedicated to: my family, parents and
siblings, with whom I spent many forever summers "riding in the car together";
to my wife and kids, who continue the tradition; and to a "summer love I'll
always treasure."
