This one is actually based on an episode of the TV show "Family Ties". In this particular episode, Alex P. Keaton (Michael J. Fox) had broken up with his girlfriend, and was seeing someone new. But he kept trying to get his new girlfried to dress and act like the old girlfriend. That became this song, though I realized after the fact that there is a lot of personal history in there as well.
